I am asked quite often how I charge for a design. Here is what i share with my clients and now with you. Hopefully this will help you when asked for pricing.
It is always important to be very clear up front of what the deal is going to be, this is the most common mistake people make is not having a price structure established in writing before the project begins.
I also encourage 50% up front especially when dealing with new clients. Hope this sheds some light for you on approaching this aspect of the business. Please feel free to share in order to help all your friends out.
What I provide based on the franchisable character description is a variety of thumbnail concepts for the clients review. This is the creation of the front 3/4 look of the model. From those drawings I will address any notes that the client may have and resubmit a second pass.
At that point we can start the refinement process of the desired character. I work on a two revision process and after that point I work on a hourly rate basis for additional revisions.
My rate per design does not include production work, such as turnarounds, expressions or attitudes that is a separate rate. Payment -50% upfront upon signing contract. Second half due upon submission of contracted work.
